PowerCo maximizes Citrix server utilization with AppSense

PowerCo, New Zealand’s second-largest electricity and gas distribution company, faced an aging and under-utilized IT estate: 220 employees supported by more than 140 physical servers—many five to ten years old—and a growing number of contractors. The team needed to consolidate servers, cut power and cooling costs, and increase capacity for 47 Citrix-hosted servers without moving their Citrix environment to a virtualized platform.

PowerCo deployed HP blade hardware and VMware for general server consolidation and used AppSense Performance Manager to optimize the Citrix estate, identifying and limiting resource-hungry applications so more users could share each server. The result: Citrix servers were reduced from 47 to 25, higher user density with no application compromises, and measurable savings in hardware, power and maintenance—achieving virtualization-like benefits without virtualizing the Citrix environment.
