Large National Retailing Company - Customer Case Study

AppNeta worked with a large national retailer that was receiving frequent complaints about slow Point of Sale (POS) application performance. The environment was complex—mobile POS devices on store Wi‑Fi—and server-side RUM showed spikes in connection time but couldn’t determine whether the problem lay in the application or the network.

Using AppNeta’s Usage and Delivery monitoring to analyze real user traffic, the team identified that network latency was about five times higher than application latency and uncovered a 32.9% retransmit rate. Diagnostics traced the issue to an overloaded firewall (hop 2) causing jitter and RTT spikes and intermittent link utilization surges on a bonded T1; this allowed the network and application teams to isolate the root cause quickly, shorten time to resolution and restore POS performance.
