Shell Pernis speeds pipe-racks inspection 10x with Applus+

The customer, Shell Pernis, a major refinery, faced the challenge of needing to perform pipe-rack inspections while reducing dangerous work at height and minimizing costly downtime during turnarounds. The vendor, Applus+, through its joint venture Applus+ RVIS, developed a custom remote inspection solution to address this need.

Applus+ implemented the CU24, a stabilized telescopic crane equipped with a high-definition camera, which was inspired by film industry technology. This solution allowed inspections to be conducted remotely from heights of up to 24 meters. The results were significant: the CU24 proved to be ten times faster than traditional methods, a great money saver, and it completely eliminated the safety risks associated with working at dangerous heights. For this commercial success, Applus+ won an award at the Shell Pernis refinery.
