The customer, Shell Pernis, which is Europe's largest refinery, faced significant challenges in inspecting complex and inaccessible maze-like piping structures within its plant. These areas were often pitch-black and too dangerous or confined for manned inspections, requiring a more efficient solution. The vendor, Applus+, addressed this need with its Applus+ RVIS remote visual inspection service.

Applus+ developed two specific tools for this client: the CU24 and the PU12. The CU24 improved inspection efficiency for piping bridges, being five times faster than conventional methods and resulting in considerable cost savings. The subsequent PU12 tool, featuring a telescopic pole with a camera and powerful light, provided 95% accessibility up to 12 meters. Both tools won Shell Pernis's Commercial Success Award for their transformative impact, with the PU12 winning within six months of its creation. The visual data collected by Applus+ helped the client set long-term maintenance and production strategies to maximize resources.
