Using Simulation to Drive Toyota’s Automated Driving System Development Process

Applied Intuition partnered with the Toyota Research Institute - Advanced Development (TRI-AD), which develops automated driving systems for Toyota. TRI-AD faced the challenge of comprehensively testing its complex software to ensure safety, requiring a way to validate tens of thousands of driving scenarios and edge cases without relying solely on physical road testing. They needed a scalable solution to accelerate their development cycle.

The solution involved implementing Applied Intuition's automotive-grade simulation tools, which were customized to integrate with TRI-AD's codebase and vehicle dynamics models. This enabled large-scale, cloud-based simulations to test the system end-to-end, including perception modules in synthetic 3D environments. As a result, Applied Intuition helped TRI-AD significantly shorten its development cycle, improve software quality by constantly testing for regressions, and scale its automated verification process.
