A Applause Case Study
VersaMe, a San Francisco startup, developed Starling, a wearable that tracks how many words babies hear each day and pairs with iOS and Android apps. With fewer than 20 staff and a small QA team, VersaMe faced the challenge of ensuring both mobile apps worked seamlessly with an already-shipped hardware device, collecting enough beta feedback to catch critical issues, and delivering a smooth experience for non-technical parents at launch.
VersaMe used Applause’s Beta Management to recruit real parents as testers, ship devices to the right customers, and integrate bug data into their existing processes; testers were paid per unique bug to ensure high-value feedback. The community found critical issues through exploratory cycles, adding 20–30 testers’ worth of coverage, which helped rapidly implement fixes, drastically reduce bugs in the wild, and ensure a reliable product launch.
