RunKeeper, a longtime leader in smartphone fitness tracking with millions of users across iOS, Android and the web, needed to guarantee that its apps reliably record runs and don’t crash mid-workout. With no dedicated QA team and a limited pool of in-house beta testers, the company struggled to reproduce real-world running conditions and global language coverage—risks that could cost user trust and retention.

RunKeeper partnered with Applause to tap a large community of real-world testers for “test runs” and localization checks while building out an internal QA team. The result was faster, more confident releases thanks to rapid bug reports, continuous in-the-wild testing by hundreds of runners across 60+ countries, validated translations in nine non-English languages, and a cost-effective alternative to hiring equivalent in-house resources.
