The University of South Australia, with more than 33,000 students and 7,000 staff, set out to modernize its employee experience as part of a strategic push to move all administrative systems online by 2018. Faced with more than 400 paper forms and slow, manual processes—especially for onboarding and timesheet management—the university needed a way to simplify administration so academics could focus on students rather than paperwork.

Using Appian Cloud’s low-code platform and Appian Sites, UniSA built integrated, branded web and mobile workflows that automate recruitment, onboarding and timesheet approvals. The solution lets candidates accept contracts on mobile devices and routes documentation and approvals online, cutting HR onboarding from three weeks to 24 hours and making timesheet processing 20× faster, with a roadmap to replace all remaining paper processes.
