A large U.S. integrated managed care organization needed a fast, flexible case management solution during the COVID-19 pandemic to support administration of a clinical trial drug to critically ill patients spread across multiple locations. The team required an easy-to-use, configurable platform that could be stood up immediately, provide real-time 24/7 patient information, and handle intake and approval workflows for clinicians with varying technology experience.

Using Appian’s low-code platform, the organization built and deployed a unified case management app in 24 hours with in-house staff, enabling real-time updates and streamlined intake/approval processes. The solution supported hundreds of patients during the trial, ultimately enrolling nearly 600 subjects (more than any other institution in the trial), tracked outcomes and adverse events, was cited in the New England Journal of Medicine, and has since been adopted across other network locations.
