Digital Transformation mobilises and automates the staff and student experience at the University of Wollongong

The University of Wollongong (UOW), a top-ranked Australian university serving 32,000+ students across 300+ programs, set out to modernise the student and staff experience by mobilising and automating processes across faculties. Faced with rapid demand for automated apps that outstripped IT capacity, UOW needed an enterprise low-code BPM platform that would accelerate delivery while allowing faculties and departments to build and deploy apps under central governance.

Using Appian’s cloud low-code BPM platform, UOW rolled out 32 applications in 18 months—covering student feedback, international mobility, homestay, contractor induction, cost-centre forms and more—while training staff and students through a “partner developer” model and boot camps. The program has processed over 6,000 student cases, streamlined end-to-end workflows, integrated with HR, finance and student systems, established a BPM Centre of Excellence, and delivered faster, more transparent operations and measurable efficiency gains.
