Alexianer - Customer Case Study

Alexianer is a non‑profit German healthcare group operating 27 hospitals and 44 nursing homes with about 27,900 employees and €1 billion in turnover. Faced with a heterogeneous IT landscape and growing data volumes, the organization needed to improve critical workflows—most notably central emergency room throughput and the complex, interdepartmental billing process—to boost quality of care, shorten wait and invoice times, and reduce administrative burden.

To do this, Alexianer created a central data warehouse and adopted Appian Process Mining (via the TIP HCe BI platform) to visualize real process flows, run target–performance comparisons, and perform ML‑supported root‑cause analysis. The analysis confirmed the ER was close to the ideal state and revealed bottlenecks in billing; by charging during treatment and improving cross‑department communication, average time from discharge to final invoice fell from about one month to under six days (≈80% reduction), documentation and coordination improved, and further optimization opportunities were identified.
