How Datadog Achieved AWS Security and Improved Developer Experience

Datadog, a monitoring service for hybrid cloud applications, needed a better way to secure access across 18 AWS accounts used by more than 600 distributed users. Its traditional VPN approach created overly broad, always-on access, poor developer experience, and limited ability to validate devices or control access to specialized resources.

Appgate addressed these challenges with Appgate SDP, a software-defined perimeter that gave users fine-grained, one-to-one access to only the AWS resources they needed across multiple accounts and locations. The solution improved security and developer productivity by removing disruptive account switching, dynamically adjusting access based on tags and new instances, and validating corporately managed devices; Datadog is now also moving Appgate SDP configuration into source control to strengthen audit and change control.
