Network Rail, the body responsible for operating Britain’s rail infrastructure, was struggling to manage a roughly £15m annual legal budget because its billing reports were produced quarterly and were routinely three months out of date. To gain timely visibility, Network Rail adopted Apperio’s real-time legal spend analytics (Apperio’s automated legal spend analytics), addressing the lack of strategic insight that left the in-house team unsure where money was being spent.

Apperio worked with Network Rail and its external firms to configure real-time dashboards and granular reporting by discipline and region, after two years of preparatory work. Using Apperio’s data, Network Rail identified duplicated external work, made faster management decisions, and ran a panel review that reduced its external firms from six to three — enabling clearer, more competitive bids and measurable cost savings across the legal programme.
