Wellio is an intelligent platform that helps people plan, shop, prepare and enjoy healthy meals at home. To power chef- and nutritionist-level recommendations it needed large volumes of annotated training data but was "data-rich but label poor," lacking the labeled images and recipe annotations required for high-accuracy ML models. Wellio turned to Appen and its Appen platform for data categorization and text annotation to solve this gap.

Using the Appen platform, Appen converted Wellio’s raw datasets into labeled training data and implemented an experts-in-the-loop workflow that included professional chefs for nuanced annotation. As a result, Wellio can perform one-time annotation at scale and maintain continuous data pipelines for ongoing predictions and retraining, giving the company higher model accuracy, the ability to integrate annotation into engineering workflows, and a strategic advantage to focus on product growth.
