How GuildLink Uses Text-to-Speech Translation to Make Consumer Medicines Information More Accessible

GuildLink, a provider of up-to-date medical information for consumers and health providers, needed a better way to make Consumer Medicines Information (CMI) more accessible. Because printed leaflets can be hard to use for people with impaired vision, non-English-speaking backgrounds, or learning disabilities, GuildLink partnered with Appen to turn CMI text into accessible audio using text-to-speech.

Appen built a custom lexicon, processed the text for accuracy, and used a tailored text-to-speech workflow to generate concatenated audio files that were converted to MP3 and returned to GuildLink. The result was the world’s first audio CMI service, helping GuildLink become one of the only companies offering it and leading to partnerships with Australian government-sponsored websites.
