The California Natural Resources Agency Optimizes Critical Systems with AppDynamics

The California Natural Resources Agency (CNRA), a cabinet-level state agency made up of 36 departments and commissions and managing a portfolio of more than 1,400 custom and commercial applications, needed better visibility into application performance to support critical services such as water management, fire response, and wildlife resources. Existing monitoring tools were cumbersome and underused, leaving IT teams unable to detect underperforming applications before they impacted users and causing frequent calls and downtime.

CNRA deployed AppDynamics starting with a quick proof of concept and rapidly gained actionable insights across infrastructure and applications. AppDynamics pinpointed capacity bottlenecks, reduced noisy alerts with dynamic baselines, and cut user-impacting incidents—resulting in months without a single support call for some systems. The platform also improved response times (for example, switching alerts from email to SMS) and now supports CNRA’s hybrid-cloud migration and future microservices strategy by providing end-to-end visibility.
