Major Travel Website Navigates Transactions End-To-End with AppDynamics

Priceline.com, part of The Priceline Group and a leading online travel reservations site, needed better visibility into its complex, multi-tier web application as transaction volume grew. Its homegrown monitoring and third‑party tools couldn’t trace distributed transactions or give consistent end‑to‑end visibility, hampering mean time to repair (MTTR) and making it hard to support an agile environment that pushes about 2,500 builds per month.

After a proof of concept, Priceline implemented AppDynamics—a low‑overhead (<1%) solution that provided distributed transaction tracing, deep diagnostics and a custom API for its container and JBoss RMI. Deployed in staging and production, AppDynamics enabled on‑the‑fly instrumentation, cut MTTR by pinpointing problematic code, uncovered a cache‑growth memory bug and excessive LDAP calls, and improved trend analysis and overall application agility.
