How Momondo Nudges Customers to Coordinate Flight and Hotel Bookings

momondo is a global travel search site that helps travelers find and book flights, hotels, and car hire. Faced with the challenge of getting users who purchased standalone plane tickets to also book hotels, momondo aimed to simplify the customer experience, make trip management easier, and increase engagement and revenue by encouraging coordinated flight-and-hotel bookings.

To do this, momondo used Appboy to send targeted, personalized push notifications (localized by language and currency and informed by past searches) that deep-linked users into in-app hotel recommendations. They added safeguards (cancelling messages when no nearby hotels were available), used machine learning to pick top-performing message variants, and leveraged Connected Content for dynamic recommendations—resulting in a 100% increase in iOS push open rates, a 291% increase on Android, and conversion uplifts of about 64% on iOS and at least 73% on Android, substantially boosting hotel bookings.
