Case Study: JUCR achieves real-time EV charging updates with Apollo GraphQL

A Apollo GraphQL Case Study

JUCR reduces charging updates to milliseconds with Apollo GraphQL

JUCR, a fast-growing EV charging provider in Germany and Europe, faced the challenge of providing reliable real-time charging status updates to its customers. Their complex infrastructure, which required coordinating over 100 events per charging request, was hindered by poor station connectivity and an inefficient polling system. This led to latency issues and an unreliable user experience. To solve this, they turned to vendor Apollo GraphQL.

Apollo GraphQL's solution involved implementing Apollo Federation with GraphQL subscriptions. JUCR built an event-driven relay system called Pathfinder to work with the GraphOS Router, enabling real-time updates across their distributed architecture. This reduced response times from seconds to milliseconds and allowed the system to process 1,000 events per second across 50+ microservices. A subsequent migration of core systems to Rust, inspired by Apollo's approach, delivered a further performance boost of up to 10x, resulting in seamless real-time updates for customers.
