Telco transformation with APIs

Telia Company, a major telecommunications provider in the Nordics, sought to transform its traditional business by empowering its internal teams to develop and manage their own API products. Their challenge was to move beyond using APIs for internal integration and scale a new "APIs as products" business model. To achieve this, they partnered with the vendor Apigee and implemented the Apigee API Management Platform.

Using Apigee, Telia established an internal "API Garden" team that provided best practices, support, and centralized infrastructure, enabling over 30 teams to become independent API product owners. This solution from Apigee allowed Telia to scale development exponentially, managing 1.5 million API calls daily and onboarding over 400 developers. The results include enabling 350 partners and successfully shifting the company's focus to a product-thinking approach, paving the way for future API monetization.
