Opening its APIs for New Customers and New Revenue

AccuWeather, the world’s leading weather media and big data company, wanted to open its APIs to individual developers in a self-service way and create new revenue streams. To do that, it turned to Apigee Edge for API management, monetization, a developer portal, and analytics to replace a manual sales-led process and support tiered API offerings.

Apigee helped AccuWeather launch a customizable developer portal, package APIs into different products with rate limits and pricing, and track and bill usage with flexible pay-as-you-go models. Within two months, the portal drove over 6,500 signups, nearly 2,500 API key creations, and close to 60 paid API package purchases, while Apigee analytics helped AccuWeather monitor traffic and identify new opportunities for growth.
