Modernizing shared services with API management

Nationwide Insurance, one of the largest insurance and financial services companies in the U.S., was challenged to modernize its IT shared services organization and move toward an API-first digital strategy. Using Apigee’s API Management Platform and developer portal, Nationwide aimed to improve developer collaboration, speed up integrations, and better support internal teams and B2B partners.

Apigee helped Nationwide federate development, shift from a centralized model to one where more than 1,000 internal developers could independently build and share APIs, and cut B2B partner onboarding from months to just days. Nationwide also moved to an “API as product” model, now exposing about 120 APIs and using Apigee reporting to track value, optimize underperforming APIs, and support measurable gains such as increased quote volume for pet insurance partners.
