How APIs help National Bank of Pakistan modernize the banking experience

The National Bank of Pakistan, the country’s largest government-owned bank, needed a way to modernize digital banking and reduce reliance on slow, manual branch-based processes for government transactions and customer services. As it expanded into fintech partnerships and multi-channel banking, it turned to Apigee with support from its implementation partner Abacus to help deliver secure, scalable API-driven services.

Apigee’s API management platform enabled NBP to open services to other banks and fintechs, speed up product development, and automate key use cases such as passport fee collection and bill payments. The bank reported a 20% reduction in the time needed to launch new solutions, has already published 10 APIs, and expects to reach 25 to 30 by year-end, while also improving customer access, easing branch workload, and simplifying government reconciliation.
