Route optimization in waste management logistics

InnovLOG, the Québec Institute for Innovation in Logistics, engaged to optimize organic waste collection and transportation for a waste-collection company. The challenge was to define optimal visit sequences, schedules and vehicle allocations that minimize CO2 emissions and logistics costs while respecting vehicle capacities, time windows and periodic demand. InnovLOG selected anyLogistix’s Transportation Optimization (TO) capabilities to model the problem (periodic CVRP from a single depot with specialized trucks) and run experiments.

Using anyLogistix, InnovLOG modeled one distribution center, 42 pickup sites, a seven‑day periodic demand and a fleet of ten 5‑ton trucks, ran TO experiments and produced an optimized plan of five routes per week with a total route cost of $121,234/week. anyLogistix’s solution reduced transportation costs and emissions, improved collection efficiency and scheduling, and delivered measurable financial and environmental benefits (fewer routes, optimized start/end times, lower carbon footprint) for the waste-collection operator.
