Managing food supply chain disruptions in a public distribution system

NITIE, now the Indian Institute of Management Mumbai, used anyLogistix to address major disruptions in India’s Public Distribution System (PDS) during the COVID-19 pandemic. With labor shortages, truck unavailability, closed transport networks, social distancing restrictions, and rising demand for food grains, the organization needed a way to understand and manage supply chain risk across a network serving millions of people.

Using anyLogistix, NITIE simulated the Maharashtra PDS network and tested multiple scenarios, including normal operations, higher demand, facility shutdowns, and the combined pandemic case. The vendor anyLogistix enabled the team to evaluate mitigation strategies such as added warehouse capacity, increased stock, faster truck speeds, and flexible inventory movement, resulting in stabilized warehouse inventory, a 5–6% improvement in rice and wheat service levels, and a more manageable number of vehicles required for distribution.
