Simulation of the Construction of a Tunnel with a Tunnel Boring Machine

RUB (Ruhr-Universität Bochum), working with SimPlan AG, faced the challenge of reducing downtime in tunnel construction with a tunnel boring machine (TBM), where breakdowns and supply chain issues could drive losses of around 20% of total project cost. They needed a simulation approach to identify bottlenecks and minimize delays, using AnyLogic simulation software.

Using AnyLogic, the team built a multimethod simulation model combining discrete-event and system dynamics methods to represent TBM operations, soil flow, disturbances, and the full supply chain. The model quantified downtime impacts, exposed bottlenecks, improved backup-stock and logistics planning, and helped reduce standstills, shorten the expected project duration, and optimize the budget.
