Rumo identifies rail bottlenecks at Port of Paranaguá with AnyLogic

Rumo, the largest railway operator in Brazil, faced the challenge of evaluating the performance and future capacity of its highly complex and stochastic railway system within the Port of Paranaguá. Traditional analytical tools could not capture the operational variability, random train arrivals, and resource conflicts affecting the system. Rumo partnered with consulting firm Paragon, which used AnyLogic simulation software to develop a dynamic model to address these needs.

The solution was a flexible simulation model built in AnyLogic that represented the full rail logistics process. It integrated Excel-based scenario management and configurable rail layouts to allow for testing operational and strategic changes without altering the simulation code. The AnyLogic model enabled Rumo to identify bottlenecks and capacity constraints before implementation, accelerate analysis through parallel scenario execution, and support collaborative long-term expansion planning.
