A AnyLogic Case Study
PREDIT, the French programme of research, experimentation and innovation in land transport, worked with AnyLogic to assess whether rail cargo transportation could compete with truck-only shipping. The challenge was to optimize a truck-rail-truck system by deciding how many rail terminals were needed, where they should be located, and how train departures and train lengths should be organized.
AnyLogic built an agent-based simulation model of terminals, stations, rail segments, shipments, trains, and railcars to compare combined transport against trucks alone. The study found that, under the current network structure and pricing, trucks were cheaper and faster; AnyLogic also delivered a flexible planning tool that lets PREDIT test terminal locations, costs, and train sizes to identify what changes would improve rail freight efficiency.
