Planning a Multi-Purpose Harbour with AnyLogic

Evans & Peck worked with AnyLogic to address the challenge of designing a multi-purpose harbour that could meet required product throughput despite constraints such as maintenance, weather delays, trucking of TEUs, and varying shipment patterns. Using AnyLogic’s discrete event simulation capabilities, they needed to determine whether the proposed operating parameters were sufficient and what additional resources might be needed to remove bottlenecks.

AnyLogic helped Evans & Peck build a simulation model of transportation, warehousing, and ship loading to test scenarios and optimize port operations. The model confirmed the harbour could achieve the required annual throughput and supported analysis of ship-size mixes and berth numbers, while identifying bottlenecks and efficiency improvements. The published model also showed high berth utilisation, including 98.4% at Berth 1 and 79.8% at Berth 2.
