Case Study: Fraport AG optimizes passenger flow and reduces waiting times with AnyLogic

A AnyLogic Case Study

Preview of the Fraport AG Case Study

Passenger Flow Simulation at Frankfurt Airport

Fraport AG, the operating company of Frankfurt Airport, faced growing passenger volumes and a highly complex terminal structure that made it difficult to increase capacity and reduce waiting times through physical expansion alone. To improve passenger flow management, Fraport AG turned to AnyLogic as part of a simulation-based forecasting approach for its airport terminal operations.

AnyLogic was used to support a simulation model developed for Fraport AG that enabled active terminal management, including dynamic sign switching and flow optimization based on current and forecasted traffic. The solution met accuracy and performance goals, running forecasts for several hours within minutes, and it has been used successfully in daily operations nearly 300 times per day. As a result, Fraport AG handled its record month of 5.5 million passengers in August 2011 without issues.
