Choosing the Best Concept for a Passenger Rail Car

CIS Rail Car Building Facility, through its Tver Carriage Works plant, needed to choose the best passenger rail car concept for a city train and compare how different door counts and widths affected passenger entrance and exit times during peak loads. The company contracted ITS Consulting, using AnyLogic simulation software and the AnyLogic Pedestrian Library, to evaluate five rail car concepts based on filling time, evacuation time, station boarding/alighting, exit path length, and car density.

AnyLogic’s pedestrian simulation with 2D/3D animation modeled different passenger types and real-world boarding behavior, then analyzed the concepts over 50 runs. The results showed that the 3-door design used space more effectively and that the version with three 1400 mm-wide doors had the shortest entrance, exit, and evacuation times, helping inform the design of the new EG2Tv electric multiple unit.
