Aurizon, Australia’s largest rail freight operator, needed to assess the capacity of a rail maintenance yard before shifting additional locomotive and wagon services there. Working with AnyLogic, through Evans & Peck consultants, the company also wanted a model that could be built quickly and reused in a larger network model if needed.

AnyLogic’s Rail Yard Library was used to simulate yard operations such as locomotive preparation, maintenance, wagon stowage, train movements, and traffic flow. The model helped Aurizon determine whether additional roads were required, whether surrounding yard operations could be moved, and how the changes would affect the Train Master Plan and coordination within the yard.

Aurizon
