Analysis of Management Strategies for the Aircraft Production Ramp-up

Airbus Group faced production slowdowns while ramping up its A350 assembly line, where custom aircraft designs, frequent engineering changes, and uneven labor allocation created bottlenecks and long lead times. To improve planning and disturbance handling, Airbus Group used AnyLogic simulation software as part of the ARUM project to model its Hamburg fuselage assembly process and test different management strategies.

AnyLogic developed a reusable simulation model that combined agent-based and discrete-event modeling to compare “traveling work” and “stop-and-fix” responses under real-world disruptions such as material shortages and design non-conformities. The solution improved decision-making through scenario testing, optimized disturbance mitigation strategies for faster ramp-ups, and was integrated into the ARUM solution architecture for future use.
