Creating a Smart Baggage Handling System for Montreal International Airport

Montreal International Airport faced the challenge of optimizing a highly complex baggage handling system as passenger traffic recovered after the pandemic and future growth returned. Working with AnyLogic and GSS, the airport needed a way to model a Smart Baggage Handling System and make better decisions across thousands of interconnected operations.

AnyLogic was used to build a flexible simulation platform and high-level control strategy for the baggage handling system, combining process modeling and material handling libraries with external data integration. The result was a model of more than 1,000 conveyors and over 100 decision points making 2.8 million daily decisions, helping the airport identify bottlenecks, support planning and contingency decisions, and consistently reach its target practical capacity.
