Manufacturing Decision Support for New Pharma Facility

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) needed to upgrade the sterile production line at its Parma pharmaceutical facility to meet regulatory standards while minimizing disruption to the supply of critical biopharmaceutical drugs. Facing volatile demand and the need to make better decisions about equipment, staffing, shift patterns, and operations, GSK turned to AnyLogic simulation software for support.

GSK, working with Decision Lab, used AnyLogic to build a two-phase simulation model with discrete-event simulation and a digital twin of the facility. The model enabled evaluation of more than 200 scenarios, revealed key constraints and sensitivities before implementation, and helped optimize layout and scheduling; as a result, the project was approved on time and projected capital expenditure was reduced by 20% through more accurate equipment sizing.
