Simulation Based Digital Twin for Well Construction Process Optimization

Transocean, one of the largest offshore drilling companies, faced the challenge of optimizing a complex well construction process that involved many manual and semi-automated operations, equipment dependencies, and variable conditions across rigs. To better understand delays and reduce downtime, Transocean turned to AnyLogic simulation software to build an oil well optimization digital twin.

Using AnyLogic, Transocean modeled the tripping stage of well construction with state machine and discrete event simulation, fed by real-time machine data and visualized through dashboards and BI tools. The result was a detailed digital twin that helped identify time losses and performance inefficiencies, with initial findings showing that over 20% of time could be saved.
