Truss Production Planning and Scheduling: Improve Throughput with Optimization

Bryden Wood, a global design and construction technology company, was working on the FASTtruss project to improve production planning and scheduling for off-site manufacture of steel-tube lattice trusses. The challenge was to move beyond traditional bespoke, labor-intensive construction methods and create a scalable, repeatable factory process with better efficiency, throughput, and safety. Bryden Wood used AnyLogic for simulation to model the factory system and evaluate different production scenarios.

Using AnyLogic, Bryden Wood built an optimized simulation of the truss factory from raw material entry to finished product, including conveyors, welding stations, cranes, forklifts, and storage and painting areas. The model helped test schedule and layout options, identify bottlenecks, and assess buffer and station requirements. The results showed how process timing changes affected throughput and highlighted where additional bays or stations may be needed, especially in painting, supporting better facility sizing, resource planning, and cost control.
