Simulating Bicycle Sharing System with the Help of AnyLogic System Dynamic Modeling

Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM) worked with AnyLogic to study a bicycle sharing system for León, Guanajuato, where urban bike sharing was still underdeveloped for a large city. The challenge was to determine how the system should be sized and where it would work best across 23 macro-areas, while accounting for demand, station capacity, and environmental impact.

Using AnyLogic system dynamics modeling, the team built a simulation to estimate the ideal number of bicycles, parking slots, and station utilization under low, expected, and high demand scenarios. AnyLogic helped visualize performance metrics and identify the busiest stations, enabling the project to define bike allocation more accurately; the analysis ultimately pointed to the two northern student areas of León as the best locations for implementation.
