Agent-based Optimal Energy Flow of an Integrated Energy System

UCL faced the challenge of improving integrated energy system analysis, where electricity, gas, and heat networks had traditionally been studied separately and agent-based methods had mostly been limited to local-scale applications. To address this, UCL used AnyLogic as the simulation platform for agent-based modeling of multi-energy networks.

AnyLogic helped UCL build a model that simulated energy flow across interconnected energy hubs using real case study data and graph theory. The solution enabled calculation of active and reactive power, voltage magnitude and phase angle, and flow potential across electricity, gas, and district heating networks, providing a network-level view that supported optimization and planning for integrated energy systems.
