A AnyLogic Case Study
Port Botany needed to move significantly more cargo by rail to reduce road congestion in Sydney, but rigid rail schedules, operational inefficiencies, and infrastructure constraints were limiting throughput. Using AnyLogic simulation software, the port and GHD expanded an existing model to test different rail schedules, operating rules, and infrastructure scenarios.
AnyLogic helped identify operational changes that could increase rail throughput by about 20% and exposed a major rail shunting bottleneck that was restricting future growth. The model also provided a staged infrastructure upgrade plan and supported stronger business cases, policy discussions, and sustainability planning for Port Botany.
