Military Aircraft Maintenance Scheduling and Staffing Optimization

The Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) needed a better way to plan staffing for highly demanding Apache helicopter maintenance, where disagreements over whether the unit was under- or over-resourced made evidence-based decisions difficult. REME worked with AnyLogic simulation software, through consultants from Decision Lab, to analyze maintenance workload, staffing, and scheduling across deployment cycles.

AnyLogic was used to build a detailed simulation model of aircraft, deployment, and people factors, including engineer experience, stress, and contractor use, so REME could test staffing strategies without simplifying real-world complexity. The result was a decision support tool that helped improve staffing coordination and optimize contractor planning; the model indicated a potential 20% increase in aircraft fleet availability at lower cost and an estimated $2.7 million in staff cost savings in the next phase.
