Improving Reliability and Profitability of Integrated Steel Supply Chain with Simulation

Goldratt Research Labs worked with one of the largest and oldest European steel manufacturers, which was struggling with low reliability, fragile supply chain performance, congestion, and weak profitability/ROI. The company needed a better way to evaluate complex changes than ERP or Excel could provide, so it turned to Goldratt Research Labs and AnyLogic simulation software to understand its supply chain and production system.

Using AnyLogic, the team built integrated simulation models of the steel supply chain, hot coil finishing, and steel/slab operations, combining agent-based, discrete event, and system dynamics methods. AnyLogic Cloud and 2D/3D visualizations helped teams test scenarios, compare alternatives, and identify root causes of congestion and low reliability; the models revealed that cost-per-ton decision-making and capacity balancing were key issues, enabling faster, safer, and lower-cost decision support for operational and financial planning.
