High Frequency Bus Route Optimization to Avoid Bus Bunching

RTC, the public transit agency for Quebec City, faced bus bunching that was hurting service reliability and creating long waits, crowded buses, and a poor experience for riders and drivers. To address this, RTC worked with AnyLogic through SimWell’s simulation modeling approach to test potential schedule and control changes before making them on the street.

AnyLogic-enabled simulation used RTC’s historical bus data to calibrate a model and evaluate different corrective actions, giving planners new KPIs such as irregularity, excess wait time, and passenger comfort. The result was a data-driven way to compare solutions and reduce risk, with RTC now using the model to guide improvements and explore future phases like controller training, optimized schedules, and even a digital twin for real-time corrective actions.
