Developing a Forecasting Simulation Model for Efficient Warehouse Operations

Western Digital, working with DSV, faced a complex warehouse operations challenge in Thailand: unpredictable daily workloads, partially filled pallets, overutilized storage, and difficulty forecasting how many operators were needed. The company lacked a tool to input forecasts and estimate KPIs for the warehouse, so it turned to AnyLogic simulation software through EPIC InnoLabs to build a forecasting model.

AnyLogic was used to develop a data-driven simulation combining process modeling, agent-based modeling, and discrete-event simulation, with inputs from Excel files and an easy-to-use interface for testing scenarios. The model added ABC logic, improved resource monitoring, and enabled experiments on staffing and inventory rules; while exact figures were not disclosed, it improved the model’s detail and capability, and future plans include expanding the forecast horizon and migrating the solution to AnyLogic Cloud.
