Modeling of Municipal Electric Vehicle Fleets

SimPlan, a German simulation and optimization service provider, worked with the city of Hanau to plan the transition of municipal bus and waste-collection fleets to low- and zero-emission vehicles. Using AnyLogic simulation software, the team needed to determine how electric buses and garbage trucks would perform despite limited range, complex routes, and shared charging infrastructure.

SimPlan used AnyLogic to build agent-based digital twin models of the bus and truck operations, testing different fleet mixes, charging setups, and schedules under real-world conditions. The results clarified seasonal EV fleet needs, revealed charging and power bottlenecks, and helped adjust routes and schedules to fit range constraints, giving the city a practical basis for its e-mobility transition.
