Predictive Healthcare Modeling Helps Evaluate the Effectiveness of a New Medication Treatment

Sterling Simulation helped a pharmaceutical company prove the operational impact of a new medication before launch. Using AnyLogic, the vendor built an emergency department simulation to compare the new treatment against standard care and a competitor option, aiming to quantify efficiency gains, trade-offs, and cost implications.

With AnyLogic, Sterling Simulation created a multimethod ED model with discrete-event flow and agent-based patient behavior to test one year of patient scenarios and track metrics such as length of stay, waiting time, admissions, LWBS, and resource use. The analysis showed the new treatment reduced overall ED length of stay by about 10%, improved admissions, and lowered bed utilization, while also providing a decision-support tool for sales teams to demonstrate value against higher treatment cost.
