A AnyLogic Case Study
Rumo, a major railway logistics company in southern Brazil, needed a clearer end-to-end view of how its rail network operated amid aging infrastructure and heavy seasonal swings in agricultural freight. Working with AnyLogic simulation software, Rumo and Genoa set out to understand capacity limits, bottlenecks, train movements, terminal operations, and planning challenges across its 7,223 km network.
AnyLogic helped build a detailed discrete-event and agent-based simulation model with GIS visualization to mirror trains, tracks, terminals, and ports. The solution showed where infrastructure was constraining capacity, helped balance loading and unloading during peak seasons, and informed decisions on train types, routing, and network expansion. Rumo used the model to test scenarios before live changes, identify structural bottlenecks, and improve railway optimization.
