Trust-based Resource Sharing in Distributed Manufacturing

EPIC Centre of Excellence faced the challenge of creating a resource-sharing mechanism for distributed manufacturing companies while accounting for trust and reputation in decision-making. Using AnyLogic, they built an agent-based simulation to model a federation of companies, requests, offers, and contract matching across partners.

AnyLogic’s solution enabled EPIC Centre of Excellence to test platform-based resource sharing scenarios and visualize utilization and reputation across 10 company agents in Hungary. The results showed the platform approach improved average resource utilization by about 30% versus direct exchange, while the impact on service levels was mixed; the model also demonstrated how a negative event could reduce reputation quickly, with resource utilization recovering more slowly due to trust dynamics.
