Railway Maintenance Yard Design and Simulation for An Australian Railcar Maintenance Provider

Advisian, the independent consulting arm of WorleyParsons Group, was tasked with modeling one of Australia’s largest rail maintenance centers, which handles planned maintenance, repair, and stabling for regional and suburban rolling stock. The depot faced severe congestion, fleet mix inefficiencies, and the need to understand its maximum operating capacity, so Advisian needed a simulation tool to analyze current performance and test improvements.

Using AnyLogic rail yard management software and the AnyLogic Rail Library, Advisian created a detailed digital model of the depot based on timetable data and facility operations. The simulation helped identify the depot’s maximum capacity and key bottlenecks causing congestion, while also enabling tests of layout and fleet mix changes; model statistics could be exported to Excel for further analysis, improving understanding of operations and supporting more efficient depot redesign.
