Wastewater Treatment Simulation for a Major UK Utilities Provider

decisionLab worked with a UK wastewater treatment company facing the challenge of improving the efficiency and sustainability of its wastewater logistics network. Using AnyLogic, the team needed to simulate and test alternative facility and routing designs in a risk-free environment before any capital investment was made.

decisionLab implemented an AnyLogic simulation model combining discrete-event and agent-based modeling, along with GIS visualization, to evaluate multiple supply-chain scenarios. The model helped benchmark logistics routing, settlement and caking processes, and anaerobic digestion utilization, revealing that 5–10 million-liter distributed AD facilities delivered the best performance. This improved energy return on investment and population served, while supporting better network planning and more sustainable infrastructure decisions.
